Land weighs in… yes, on alcohol.

Guess what topic is in the news again? Yep. Southern Baptists and alcohol.
Looks like Richard Land is weighing in now. Here’s the editorial, in Baptist Press News.
Side note… I did not know J. J. Redick has been arrested for DUI, nor was I aware that he claimed Christ. I wonder if there aren’t more people that are now aware that he stumbled in his walk than before Richard’s article (well, I guess that’s a stupid question, since I didn’t know but now do, there MUST be one more that now knows)?
Anyway… agaiin, I’m so tired of this issue… it’s such a distraction!

I agree about our witness. Redick and Jim Harbaugh had a similar problem last year.

I agree with Richard’s point… but I do question the specific calling out of another believer as an example to make his point. I wonder if Richard’s article hurts J.J.’s witness further given that it draws yet more publicity to his sin?
It’s a fine line to walk, I guess, but it just didn’t feel right to me.

You may be right. But honestly I would have never thought JJ was a believer because of what happened. Maybe that is my own plank in the eye but just being honest.

Sorry about the triple posts

I just figured you wanted to emphasize your point…
I’ll delete the extras. I’ve noticed that the database server for this blog has been a bit buggy recently, so that’s probably what happened.

You know, here’s one way to look at it: Southern Baptists might be declining in baptisms and giving, going through strife in our mission boards, and can’t find half our members, but doggone it, we sure know how to be against alcohol! We do that really well, as is evidenced by over FORTY resolutions against the substance. We pass ANOTHER resolution against alcohol with over 90% of the vote and the fact that a few people have a problem with it causes all the big guns of Baptist life to come out firing away. This is becoming absurd! Why is this such an issue to them? Is it that they are completely amazed that anyone dare oppose them? Why can’t we move on?
Maybe we should follow Paul’s admonition in Romans 14 to keep what we think about disputable matters between us and God so we are not condemned by what we approve of. I think we would all do well to follow that advice. But, we can comment on the absurd nature of this debate? Do Baptist leaders have to keep beating the alcohol drum? Or, is this just a topic that can be used to paint dissenters as liberal wine guzzlers? Just some food for thought, but I promise these arguments will be used against those who opposed the resolution.
