Running in circles…

August 7th, 2006 | Posted in » Baptist Issues

Gee… guess what’s in the news again by a prominent Baptist? Another condemnation of alcohol use. Check out the article here. Anyone feel like we’re running in circles?

Yes, Bobby Welch, our outgoing president, saw fit to bash all of those heavy drinking pastors (especially those bloggin’ boys) who “promote the drinking of alcoholic beverages”. Well, okay, so they’re not heavy drinkers (if drinkers at all)… and well, maybe they don’t promote drinking… but heck, let’s just go ahead and imply that’s what they stood for at the convention. It’s always fun to trash another believer by assigning false motives, right?

Come on now, Bobby! I know you’re a far more intelligent man than what the quotes in that article would indicate. I know you’re smart enough to know the stance many take on this issue isn’t one that’s about promoting alcohol use. You’re well-aware this is simply a stand many have taken against the setting of extra-Biblical bounds on Christian liberty.

Why not simply tell the truth? Why not simply state that while Baptists almost universally agree that alcohol use generally has negative implications, that the Bible doesn’t specifically prohibit it? Why insist on extra-Biblical bounds? Why imply the worst about those who refuse to set such bounds?

This blind, bumbling, bloggin’ boy just doesn’t get it.

We know who he was talking about. What he should have done is used Matt 18 if he really thought he was doing something wrong.

I’m tired of being lumped in with everyone else too. I don’t drink but because I’m a blogger I am part of that group. We don’t all agree on everything although I can’t find anywhere in the Bible that it says alcohol is a sin. Drunkeness yes!

“Oh yes! Undoubtedly, the greatest surprise to almost everyone was that several Southern Baptist pastors actually came to a microphone and publicly promoted the drinking of alcoholic beverages and wanted the SBC to do the same!”

“These blogging Baptist pastors just blew their collective cork!”

What a misrepresentation of what actually happened! But, I really think that the establishment is using the alcohol thing to discredit the “blogging Baptist pastors” as a form of blowback. No one was promoting the drinking of alcoholic beverages or was wanting the SBC to do the same! That is just not true. But, I am bored with this whole thing. This was such a minor thing, it is amazing the coverage it has gotten. But, then again, there is a solid reason behind it, obviously.

Even though I have not written about the alcohol resolution except in a tongue and cheek way to make light of the whole ridiculous controversy, I guess that just because I am a pastor that blogs I’m all for boozing it up! What a joke.

    A poem I once heard:

“He drew a circle that shut me out…
“Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout…
“But wit and I had the will to win…
“We drew a circle that shut him in”

He’s not putting the folks who stand on scripture in a box. He’s putting himself in one. And others who choose to agree with him.

Ok, so it’s a round box.

John, Welch’s interview really got me thinking about bearing false witness. I wrote a post on it today and linked back to you.

    Dear Brother John,

Watch out—you’ve been seen with me. You must be a binge drinking wife beater, too!

    Love in Christ,

    Jeff

Wow, if I only I knew that I was hanging out with such unsavory characters in Greensboro…

So much for my convention leadership aspirations! :)
