McKissic’s Sermon Transcript

Looks like Wade has the scoop… the transcript of Rev. McKissic’s sermon from yesterday’s chapel service at Southwestern.
Check it out here, and decide for yourself whether what he said was inappropriate for a chapel service.
UPDATE…
I finally got through reading this sermon (it didn’t take long, but my family is a much higher priority than Blog Town). All I can say is… WOW. What a message. Really touched my heart, opened my eyes, and reminded me of our constant need for the Holy Spirit.
As for the controversy surrounding this? I can see absolutely NO REASON to withhold this sermon from the public. In fact, doing so may, at least in my opinion, damage churches in and of itself, as we are in dire need of a good reminder of our need for the Spirit. The controversy surrounding this is not only a good thing… it’s a God thing… drawing people’s interest to it, perhaps that He might drive us to seek Him… to ask Him to fill us anew with the Spirit, that we might have the fullness of God’s power working in our lives to make a difference in this world.
I pray (no, not in tongues) simply that God might open all of our eyes once again to our need for continual filling of the Spirit… that we might all be willing to simply ask God not only to fill our cups with the blessing of His Spirit… but to ensure that we are overflowing with the Spirit that the world may know Him.

I read Rev McKissic’s sermon and thought it was excellent. He acknowledges that ALL Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and that the Spirit Himself is the real gift, more so than the specific charismatic gifts. This is truth.
My first experience of “charismatic Christians” was not a good one. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit was regarded by them as a separate event evidenced by one of the recognized gifts, usually tongues, and that a Christian was “immature” or “blocked by sin” if not having experienced this event in a particular way. In fact, it was likened to travelling to heaven first class as opposed to second class ~ the charismatic Christian being in the first class carriage. This is an ugly, arrogant and untrue notion, and extremely off-putting. There is only one way, and that is Jesus (John 14:6).
Rev McKissic speaks of one Spirit but many in-fillings, and that is born out in my own experience. He is not arrogant and superior. I thought he wrote simply of the truth of his own experience and understanding, supported by his theological knowledge. His sermon acknowledges a fact of Christian experience, his own personal experience, which is shared by many other Christians also. Why not acknowledge it? As long as this aspect of Christian experience is swept under the carpet, kept hidden as though it is shameful, then we are not giving God the glory for the way He works in the lives of many Spirit-filled Christians.
I agree with you, John. I also see absolutely no sound reason to keep this sermon from the public, nor from proper discussion among Christians willing to approach the issues with all due respect, humility and an openness to God.
