You’ve Gotta Love Wiley…

October 27th, 2006 | Posted in » Baptist Issues

Check out this article, about our beloved SBC 2nd VP, Wiley Drake. Seems that he’s been making a few waves recently as a result of his election.

Here’s the deal… whether you love him or loathe him, you can’t deny that he’s definitely full of enthusiasm to make a difference in our convention through his role as 2nd VP. I’m thankful for Wiley, and pray that God channels his enthusiasm into productive work for the Kingdom.

I’ve gotta be honest with you, John. You know how much I love Wiley, but I’m not loving this article, nor the Wiley that it presents. I can only hope that this involves some misquoting because it’s bothersome to me.

I know what you mean, Micah, but you’ve got to remember that Wiley says and does things from time to time that are a bit “out there”. It’s what makes Wiley… well, Wiley. He IS a bit of a polarizing figure in SBC life… most people either love him or loathe him.

What can’t be denied (and must be appreciated, if you ask me) is the fact that he’s so enthusiastic to do something with his role as 2nd VP. If our executive committee, our president, or some other appropriate person would provide a bit more direction for him to help channel that enthusiasm, he would no doubt do some great things for our convention.

I’ll jump on the Honesty Bandwagon too. I like Wiley, but he oughtn’t to have run for the Office if he didn’t know what the “duties” were. If he did know, then he doesn’t really have a place to exceed them.

I admire his ministry very much but that doesn’t excuse using a church letterhead to endorse a political candidate. The IRS might rain all over his parade over that. The Lord’s work shouldn’t be exposed to that. THAT fact about the IRS has been plastered all over for years.
