Barack, What Bible are You Reading?

I really don’t like to focus on politics here very often, but I had to highlight this item as it simply left me baffled.
Apparently, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama seems to think civil unions (code for same-sex marriage, of course) are justified based on Christ’s Sermon on the Mount:
“I believe in civil unions that allow a same-sex couple to visit each other in a hospital or transfer property to each other,” he said, referring to unions that grant all the legal benefits of marriage, minus the name. “I don’t think it should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state. If people find that controversial, then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans. That’s my view. But we can have a respectful disagreement on that.”

What Bible have you been reading, Barack?
A word of advice… don’t try to use the Bible to support something it doesn’t. A LOT of people listen to you and believe what you say (regardless of how outlandish your statements may be), and when you start giving misguided spiritual advice, you’re jeopardizing a lot more than just votes.
You did catch what that sermon you’re so fond of says about false prophets, right?

That’s really disturbing when people misuse the word of God. If and when my husband becomes a pastor that is my biggest fear taking the scriptures out of context. That is why I ask a lot of questions now before that time comes. Your advice is dead on. I’d hate to be held accountable for teaching people a false gospel. Of course I won’t do the teaching but I have influence on my husband.

Great observation. Of course he isn’t the only one who does that.

OK lets forget Romans for a minute Barack, what about the rest of the Bible?
Let’s say about 1950 years ago…?
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 “Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.”
Or what about 3500 years ago or so…?
Leviticus 18:22 “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin. Leviticus 20:13 “If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.
Seems to me, God doesn’t CHANGE His mind on how we should live. I don’t think that we should find it our place to decide otherwise! Being as we are “A nation under God” and all.
I read this last night and was so in awe and disbelief of what he said I didn’t even know what to say. Thanks for posting it John. I think people need to see what is going on in the political realm so that they can make the right choice based on their beliefs.
